Understanding Your Death Benefits

In today’s workforce, no one wants to talk or think about DEATH BENEFITS.  Some years back my mother said she needed to talk to me, about insurance and burial benefits, “just in case something happen”. Of course my reaction was “MOM” I don’t want to talk about that.  Well we did have that conversation and today I’m coming to you to have the same discussion.

QUESTIONS:

1. Do you have your benefit and insurance papers accessible for family member or a person, whom will handle your arrangements?

2. Do you have a list of all benefits and insurances?  *This list should include the company’s name, phone numbers, policy numbers and the amount of benefits.

3. Have you updated your benefit and insurance papers with the correct beneficiary (beneficiaries) and the value of each policy?  * If your status has changed (marriage, divorce and /or children) you must update your papers.

As an active C.T.A employee your death benefits are $8,000.00 (with one to five years of service).  The amount increases to $18,000.00 (with more than five years of service).  If you elected to pay the extra premium when hired by C.T.A your benefits doubles to $36,000.00.

As a retired C.T.A employee your death benefits are based on service time and age.  Benefits are $2,000.00, $4,000.00, $6,000.00 or $8,000.00.  These benefits come from the pension plan.

As a member of Local 308 your death benefits are $1,300.00 ($300.00 from Local 308 and $1,000.00 from the International).

REMINDER (DEATH NOTICES):

Local 308 assume the responsibility of posting death notices for Local 308 members ONLY.  Once the immediate family contact Local 308 and grant permission for information to be posted, notice will be faxed out to the property.
